(Korea: Screen Door - EMC) Korea Plans New EMC Requirements for Platform Screen Door (PSD) Sensors

The Korean government is planning to introduce new technical requirements and conformity assessment scope for Platform Screen Door (PSD) sensors, as part of national safety measures addressing potential malfunctions caused by broadband 5G mobile communications signals.
Concerns have been raised regarding unintended operation of PSD sensors due to exposure to wideband RF fields from 5G systems. To mitigate these risks, the EMC standards for multimedia equipment are expected to be revised to ensure sufficient radiated RF immunity for laser sensors (or LiDAR sensors) used in PSD systems.
A public consultation period was conducted until December 19, and further details will be announced once the revised regulation is officially promulgated..

[Key Proposed Changes]

(Korea: USB-C Connector) To Mandate USB Type-C Connectors

The long-anticipated mandate requiring the use of USB Type-C connectors, which had previously been delayed due to pending regulatory review, has now been re-announced in Korea.

The regulation will take effect on November 6, 2026, following a one-year grace period. Compared to the earlier draft, the revised proposal introduces additional dimensional contact requirements based on whether the connector shell is conductive or non-conductive..

[Key Provisions]

  • 1. Scope of Applicable Equipment
The USB Type-C connector mandate will apply to the following categories of equipment:
    • 1) Mobile phones
    • 2) Tablets

(Korea: SAR KSDB) KSDB on SAR Measurement Methods for Gun-Type RFID Readers

The National Radio Research Agency (RRA) of Korea has published a KSDB (Knowledge Sharing Database) document specifying Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) measurement methods for gun-type RFID readers that are used within 20 cm of the human body.
KSDB documents serve as guidelines for regulatory frameworks and testing practices. The published document is available on the RRA website under:
Announcements > Conformity Assessment Knowledge Sharing DB > Technical Standards & Test Methods DB.

[Key Contents]

  • Definition of Gun-Type RFID Reader
    • 1) A wireless communication device shaped like a handgun,
    • 2) with the antenna located at the front,
    • 3) and designed to operate RFID signals in a single-shot (intermittent) manner when a trigger button on the handle is pressed.
  • SAR Measurement Methodology
    • 1. Applicable Exposure Limits
      • - The limb SAR limits specified in the human exposure protection standards shall be applied.
    • 2. Measurement Surfaces
      • - SAR shall be measured on all surfaces that may be exposed to the human body.
    • 3. General Measurement Requirement
      • - For gun-type RFID readers, SAR measurements shall, in principle, be conducted on six surfaces (six-sided measurement).
    • 4. Measurement Exemptions
      • - Surfaces for which human exposure is not reasonably expected may be excluded from measurement.
      • - Specifically, the front surface may be exempted from SAR measurement if there is no concern of human exposure, and the antenna’s main radiation direction is oriented toward the front.
      • - When any surface is excluded from measurement, the test report must clearly state the technical justification for the SAR measurement exemption for that surface.
